Texas License renewal

On a biennial basis,
licensees must renew their license(s). Licensees are given a reminder postcard at least 30 days before their renewal date to remind them that they must renew their license. The postcards are mailed to the licensee's registered address. If you do not keep your address on file up to date, you may not receive the renewal reminder.

Licensees must renew each active and inactive license they hold online, and they are advised to do it during regular business hours and well ahead of the deadline. It will ensure that licensees have access to agency professionals outlined in the Council's rules apply to a licensee who does not renew their license randomly chosen to license expiration date. An overdue license will also expire if it is not renewed within one year of its expiration date.

Eligibility Criteria

It is eligible for renewal if:

1. If a license is active or inactive and is within 60 days of expiration

2. The license has not been late (expired) for more than one year.

3. You've completed the required number of hours of continuing education.

4. You have completed an HHSC-approved human trafficking prevention training course.

Every month, 5% of each license type eligible for Texas License renewal is randomly chosen to undergo a CE hours audit. Licensees are advised of their selection and must show proof of their continuing education hours to renew their license. Licensees may also be chosen for an audit if they fail to meet the continuing education criteria for the license they have.

Final Thoughts

Licensed marriage and family therapists need to complete a minimum of 30 clock hours of continuing education each time their license is renewed. Licensed marital and family therapist associates must complete a minimum of 15 clock hours of continuing education each time their license is renewed.

At least 6 hours of the total hours must be in the field of ethics, and these hours may be applied to the entire amount of time necessary. Each renewal period, a supervisor must complete a minimum of 3 hours of clinical supervision, continuing education, and pass the jurisprudence examination to maintain a supervisory position.
